2010 Race Schedule now posted and a new printable version is available with additional columns for racers to keep track of their points per race. Rattlesnakes, Racing & Rollovers in Medicine Hat With only a few races left, the last scheduled race in Medicine Hat for this season proved to be a bit different than the typical race day that we usually experience. The regular sounds of engines, tools, bantering between drivers and crews were briefly interrupted by the commotion and a little scream emitting the normally quiet, reserved and passive Carolyn Laughy in the #17 pit as she realized that a rattlesnake had just slithering unconcerned underneath the chair and between her feet. Thanks to retired owner/driver Larry Carlson (#4 Car in the Pro Division) who came to the rescue using a car hood and his snake whispering talents to coerce the snake into the adjacent field, race day continued on. Though several of us were a bit gun shy to venture very far away from pit lane without glancing at the ground or hesitantly opening the door of the portable “facilities”. – just in case. The heat races were fast and furious with Masters Division Darrell Buckingham taking the checkers in Heat 1A with fast qualifier Pro Driver #42 of Hugh Williamson close on his bumper. Heat 1B was won by #32 (Pro) Adam Gilbert with the Young Lion #81 Dexter Hucal in his rearview. Masters #89 Grant McDonald came in 3rd. It was the 2nd set of heats that had several cautions. Heat 2A started off with a total restart due to a caution in Lap 1 that disabled the 007 car of Young Lion JD Bergdahl.
Later in the same heat while #42 Hugh Williamson took the checkers with #17 Ira Laughy (M) and #24 (S) Brad Blumer close behind, the #27 of Masters Lowell McLaren connected with the #28 of Young Lion Matthew Priest & collected the #22 driven by Young Lions Tyler Walls at the start of their white flag lap, an incident causing both 18 & 22 to roll. The drivers were all checked and deemed ok by the EMT's although all three cars were parked for the balance of the night. Young Lion Chelsea Wilson, the only female racer in the series this year, drove the wheels of her 09 car keeping veteran racer BJ Marion (Masters Division) in the #78 car at bay for the duration of the B-Main. A very happy Wilson, brought home her first win of the season. Both drivers including Young Lion KJ Rae (#34 car) who came in third advanced to the A-Main. Four laps into the A-Main, #81 Dexter Hucal connected with Masters driver #89 Grant McDonald coming out of turn 4 which caused a caution. B-Main winner Chelsea Wilson with no place to go was caught up in an incident that disabled her car as well as McDonald's #89 for the night. The Main was won by Adam Gilbert #32 (Pro) followed by #17 Ira Laughy (M) and Brad Blumer in the #24.
The drivers that made the trip were: # 007 JD Bergdahl, # 3 RD Bergdahl, #17 Ira Laughy, # 19 Brett Semeniuk, # 22 Rick Walls, # 22K Mike Kipp, # 32 Adam Gilbert, # 56 Chris Reid, # 89 Grant McDonald and #H20 Darrell Buckingham. A big thank you to our very own Lance Tymkow, (Owner Driver of the #97) who transported most of the cars to Charlotte in his Tractor/Trailer. More news & photos to follow ...
May 15th - Mac's Legends Racing Series Season Opener in Wetaskiwin, AB
With the recent rains and snowfalls, the idea of having the first race seems a distant dream, still, you know after all that this is "Alberta" and the weather can change extremes on a daily basis... hourly in some places. Whether it rains or shines, the racers will make their way to Wetaskiwin, AB, with the hope of gettin' back to racin'.
For the rookies, this is a new adventure, a time to see what this
Legends series is all about, for the veterans its seeing old friends
and making new ones, but commonly..its the smell of the grease, the
fuel, the burning rubber, the BBQ at concession, the sound of
engines revving, the noise of an impact down pit lane, the screaming
tires and the cheering crowd as we the racers entertain them! Competitor Gates will open at 2pm, Spectator Gates at 4 pm. Racing begins at 5:30. For more information, please visit EIR's website.
Racers Lose their Lazy Winter Weekends With the noticeably warmer temperatures and melting snow, plans to get ready for the new race season start to slowly enter a racer's mind. As trailer doors get opened, the sun glints off the now disturbed dust and hazy visions and memories from last year's season bring the realization that your slow lazy winter weekends are now going to become "work" weekends. With a deep sigh and a hesitant shrug of your shoulders you release the car from its restraints and roll her out into the daylight. There she sits, looking sad, tired and dirty. Suddenly, almost as if the last 5 months never happened, you remember all the repairs and changes you had planned to do over the winter. Again you shrug your shoulder, you lift your hat to quickly run your hand through your hair before you push your baby into the garage. The car is quickly assessed, you jot down a little list of parts you're going to need -- you stop to reflect., nahh.. I'll call Rick or Wayne later -- right now the hunt begins for the tools that were haphazardly thrown into tool boxes at last years season finale. Those brave enough reach for your race suits, helmets and shoes and though you know better, you bring it close to your nose and take that hesitant sniff. Oooh yea.. definitely needs to get cleaned - so you toss it off to the side to be dealt with later - back to the car. Some racers instinctively know they're going to need every weekend to get the car and themselves ready for that first race while others are content knowing that they only need to do some minor touch-ups, a bolt check and some fluid changes. Plenty of time to get it done. As you lovingly caress the top of the car you notice a scratch.. hmm.. maybe some paint will cover that up -- but then will the paint match?? Ha! Maybe a new paint job would be nice.....and suddenly, you too have lost your slow lazy winter weekends.
